RCoA releases film showcasing anaesthesia as a career in celebration of National Careers Week

To help celebrate National Careers Week – the College has released a film, aimed at undergraduates considering a career in anaesthesia. The film features six anaesthetists at various stages of their careers discussing their personal experiences with the specialty. It gives first-hand accounts from anaesthetic registrars, a Medical Training Initiative (MTI) doctor, a Staff Associate Specialist (SAS) and a clinical fellow in anaesthesia, all talking about their chosen career paths. 

The film is four minutes long and gives a broad overview of anaesthesia. Later this year individual interviews with each of the interviewees will be released to give those interested, an in-depth look at the different aspects of an anaesthetist’s work and why some choose to pursue anaesthesia.

Whilst Anaesthesia is the single largest hospital specialty, it is not always the first that many first think of when deciding on a medical specialty. It is hoped that this film will go some way to redress this as it has been shared across the College’s medical schools networks.

In addition to the film’s release to help mark National Careers Week, the College has also been involved in the sponsorship of the National Careers Week mail out to be shared nationally with teachers and career leads. Alongside other professions, the College has provided details about the specialty and how teaching leads should discuss anaesthesia with their students.

The College is committed to supporting and guiding undergraduates and foundation year doctors when choosing a career in anaesthesia, pain medicine or intensive care and has a wealth of information available to help guide and inform about the specialty on the College website.
