External Adviser for ARCP
According to the current Gold Guide (version 9, 2022), a minimum of 10% of Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) panels across the UK should be reviewed from an external adviser.
To meet this requirement, we maintain a list of External Advisers who attend panels at the request of Deaneries.
External Advisers
The voluntary role of an External Adviser involves providing expert, impartial advice and scrutiny on the processes of delivery, assessment, and evaluation of specialty training, in line with the GMC Quality Assurance Framework (QAF). As per the QAF, it is essential that the host Deanery/NHSE Local Office can confirm the independence of External Advisers.
The External Adviser is an independent member of ARCP panels and act as the Specialty Adviser representative. Following the scheduled ARCPs, you would be required to submit a report, focusing on key areas such as decision-making, quality of evidence, curriculum delivery, ARCP targets (if applicable), and an overall rating of the process observed.
By participating in this role, you will gain valuable insight into the functioning of other panels, which can enrich your own practice. You'll also have the opportunity to bring back best practices to your own institution and use your experiences to enhance your CPD portfolio. Moreover, this role significantly contributes to the value of ARCPs by ensuring that the processes are rigorous, fair, and consistent. Your involvement directly supports the College's commitment to maintaining the highest standards of training and assessment in our specialty.
