Obituary - Colonel Dr Donald Stuart Hutton RAMC FFRCS (Edin) FRCA
1930 to 2004
Don Hutton attended St Alban’s Grammar School as a child and went on to study medicine as part of his National Service. He specialised in anaesthetics and had experience of practicing in far east countries such as Burma, The Oman and Singapore. He married Patricia Barnacle in Dulwich in 1953 and had five children. He worked for many years at Millbank Hospital, London (now part of Tate Britain) and then Queen Elizabeth Military Hospital Woolwich, reaching the rank of Colonel in the RAMC. He was the inventor of the RAMCET (Royal Army Medical Corps Emergency Trolley) together with Brigadier Voller, which was useful in field surgery. He left the army soon after the Falklands War and joined the NHS working at Scunthorpe General Hospital until his reluctant retirement. He had many interests including calligraphy and photography and was a life-long learner of new skills, especially DIY. He is sadly missed by all having passed away on 25 February 2004 from carcinoma of the prostate with metastases. He did an amusing impression of Mick Jagger.
