Outcome of the College’s Extraordinary General Meeting
Many thanks to our Members and Fellows who attended the College’s Extraordinary General Meeting on 10 February 2022 to vote on changes to the College’s governance structures, the rules that set out how it is run.
The proposals included providing clearer separation in the roles of the Board of Trustees and the Council, including reducing the number of Trustees from 29 to 15 and reserving a place for at least one Anaesthetist in Training Trustee and one SAS Doctor Trustee. It also included giving more powers to members, such as the ability to vote to end the term of an existing Trustee or Council member. The meeting also heard that the Board of Trustees had agreed to double the number of Anaesthetist in Training representatives on the Council, an increase from two to four.
For the proposal to pass, at least two thirds of those present needed to vote in favour. This meant there needed to be 101 ‘for’ votes out of the 151 eligible voters present.
The votes were:
- For: 83
- Against: 47
- Did not vote: 21
Therefore, the motion did not pass.
It remains imperative that the College updates and corrects inconsistencies in its current Charter and Ordinances and agrees the size and composition of the Board of Trustees – the latter being a decision that would complete an earlier review. We will therefore take the proposal away for further consideration and consultation, before bringing it back to the membership to vote.
Thank you to everyone who has engaged in what has already been a lengthy and detailed process, we hope that we can count on your continued engagement as we revise our proposal.
RCoA President
