The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death Prison Healthcare Study
The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD) is undertaking a new study to investigate the remediable factors in the clinical and organisation of healthcare for people who died from a ‘natural’ or other ‘non-natural’ death whilst detained in prison. The key objective of this study is to produce focussed, evidence-based recommendations to improve the commissioning, monitoring, provision and quality of healthcare in prisons, with the aim of preventing avoidable and premature deaths in the future.
NCEPOD is recruiting a multi-disciplinary group of healthcare professionals with a working interest in prison healthcare. Case reviewers will be asked to attend meetings during which they will assess the healthcare records and NHSE commissioned clinical reviews of the study sample and provide expert opinion on the healthcare provided to prisoners prior to their death.
A training day will be held on 14th July 2022, at a London location (if you are unable to make this date, training on an ad-hoc basis is possible). You would typically be required to attend/join a minimum of four subsequent case reviewer meetings at the NCEPOD offices in London. It is anticipated case review meetings will begin in August 2022 and will run for approximately six months. The data collected during these meetings will form a major part of the study’s final report.
Travel expenses will be reimbursed, and lunch will be provided. NCEPOD is looking for clinicians who work in the community and within hospitals from a wide variety of specialties (including, but not limited to acute, emergency, general, respiratory, and geriatric medicine; anaesthetics, pharmacy, gastroenterology, and cardiology). NHS clinical reviewers are also invited to apply. NCEPOD aim to recruit clinicians from different clinical grades of at least ST6/Nursing Band 6 and above to ensure that applicants have enough experience for the case note review aspect.
Applicants should be in current clinical practice. Further information about this study including a copy of the study protocol can be found on the NCEPOD website.
