Great Western Hospital has been accredited under the prestigious Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) demonstrating their commitment to patient safety and excellence of care.

ACSA is the RCoA’s peer-reviewed scheme that promotes quality improvement and the highest standards of anaesthetic service. To receive accreditation, departments are expected to demonstrate high standards in areas such as patient experience, patient safety and clinical leadership.

Dr Katarina Sebekova, ACSA lead Great Western Hospital, said:

“The Anaesthetic Department at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is proud to have been awarded the prestigious ACSA. Throughout this journey, we have implemented significant improvements to our service, leading to enhanced safety, streamlined processes, and better outcomes for our patients.

We were pleased to demonstrate the high standards of patient care within our department to our peers and the ACSA review team.

We extend our sincere thanks to all the colleagues who contributed to this achievement, including the pre-assessment team, anaesthetic theatre practitioners, recovery nurses, and anaesthetic doctors. Their dedication and support have been instrumental in securing this accreditation."

Dr Rhys Clayton, lead clinical ACSA reviewer, said:

“Congratulations to Great Western on achieving ACSA accreditation. We found a well-functioning department with several areas of excellence, fully committed to delivering a high standard of care to their patients. Their commitment to high quality care and strong clinical governance is reflected in their achievement of ACSA accreditation from the RCoA.”

Mr Bob Evans, lay ACSA reviewer, said:

“It was a privilege to visit Great Western Hospital and review the anaesthetic services. I was impressed by the team spirit and strong patient-centred ethos. It was particularly good to see involvement in the ACSA process by SAS doctors.”

Dr Fiona Donald, Royal College of Anaesthetists Council Member, said:

“I would like to offer my personal congratulations to the entire anaesthetic department on achieving ACSA accreditation. It is very impressive to see the commitment and approach of the whole department to sustaining their standards. They have demonstrated their ability and passion for providing the best possible care for their patients.

“Patient safety is at the heart of what we do as a Medical Royal College. The quality improvement demonstrated during the accreditation process has helped the department manage the immense tasks presented to them by COVID-19 and the resumption of normal services.

“It was impressive to see the innovative practices taking place at the hospital, and the excellent commitment from all staff during the process. As well as meeting the standards, the department demonstrated many areas of excellent advanced practice that have now been highlighted for sharing through the ACSA network.”
