College Awards

The College is delighted to announce details of awards from the September 2024 meeting of the RCoA Nominations Committee:  

 

Dr Barry Miller has been awarded the Gold Medal, our highest award to a Fellow of the College, in recognition of his outstanding work as a Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Pain medicine

Dr Barry Miller was one of the founding members of the Faculty of Pain Medicine in 2007. From the beginning of the Faculty he was an active member, becoming one of its Regional Advisors in Pain Medicine for the Northwest of England in 2007, a position he held until 2015. He was elected to the Board of the FPM in 2012 and has been the longest serving member of the Board to date.  He went on to be elected Dean in 2016 a position he held until 2019.  Dr Miller has a wide and impressive medical portfolio with special interests in interventional management of cancer pain and training in pain medicine.  He is a peer reviewer for the British Journal of Anaesthesia.

Dr Barry Miller will receive his award at the RCoA Annual Diplomates Day, held in London on 5 September 2025

 

Dr Soundararajan Jagan Jagdish has been awarded the Dudley Buxton prize in recognition of his meritorious work in contributing to the progress of the specialty.

A retired colonel, ‘Jag’ deployed extensively over nearly 30 years’ service. He helped reinvigorate equipment procurement in anaesthesia, pain and critical care to resonate with emerging advances in trauma care during the years of high combat intensity in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, a history researcher, Jag has an MA (Research) in Military History and has been elected to the Royal Historical Society. Volunteering regularly in heritage organisations, he is a keen promoter of medical history. He was the President of the Medical Society of London in its 250th year in 2023.

Dr Jagdish will receive his award at the Anaesthetic Updates event to be held 5-7 February 2025

 

Miss Rachel Hargest has been awarded the Webb-Johnson Oration.  This prestigious lectureship is awarded by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Miss Rachel Hargest is an academic colorectal surgeon in Cardiff, co-director of the Global Surgery Policy Unit and Council member of Royal College of Surgeons of England.  Her research interests include genetic changes in colorectal, gastric, breast and lung cancer, early diagnosis of colorectal cancer, global surgery and the role of guidelines in controlling surgical practice. She is also President of the Welsh Surgical Society and Past President of the Royal Society of Medicine Section of Surgery.
