Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

After graduation Bingham was a House Officer at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. Next he joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) as a Surgeon Lieutenant, serving on rescue ships in the North Atlantic Ocean and later the Mediterranean Sea. On demobilisation he undertook the post of Resident Anaesthetist at Ards District Hospital. In 1954 he was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist to Lurgan and Portadown Hospital with sessions at Banbridge Hospital and Armagh City Hospital. Later he was Consultant Anaesthetist at Ulster Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast, and Royal Maternity Hospital Belfast. He retired in 1982.  

Professional interests and activities

The initiator of respiratory intensive care in Ulster in 1950, he published several papers on anaesthesia from 1957 onwards. He was a member of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland, and of the British Medical Association (BMA). He amalgamated the Armagh and Down divisions of the BMA as chairman, and he was chairman of staff of both the Royal Maternity and Ulster Hospitals. In the 1960s and 1970s he served on the Board of the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. In 1980 he was Vice President of the Ulster Medical Society. 

Other biographical information

Predeceased by a son, he passed away at the age of 90, survived by his wife Nora, three children and five grandchildren.
