Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
Before WW1 was junior house surgeon, Royal Preston Infirmary, house surgeon & house physician, Ancoats Hospital, Manchester, senior house surgeon at the latter, and assistant medical officer at Brares Convalescent Hospital, Cheadle before setting up in GP in Wellington, New Zealand in 1912. However, he returned to the UK and spent the war as resident medical officer to the military section of the Royal Free Hospital, London. From 1921 he was honorary anaesthetist there and at the Royal Northern, Queen Mary’s (Stratford), the Metropolitan ENT & St Peter’s (for Stone) Hospitals. His association with the Royal Free ended after a few years and was replaced by Great Ormond Street Hospital around 1927; it became his main hospital until he retired as senior consultant in 1951. During WW2 he was specialist anaesthetist to the EMS’s Wellhouse Hospital, Barnet.
Professional interests and activities
Awarded the OBE in 1919 and the DA without examination in 1935.
Other biographical information
Married Hilda Gladys May Bright, but there were no children. A shy individual, he was known for the superlative care he gave to his patients, and his kindness to them and his colleagues.
