Nicky was a Wessex anaesthetic trainee and was appointed consultant anaesthetist in Portsmouth in 1996.

Professional interests and activities

Her interests were reflected in membership of the AAGBI, The Wessex Association of Children’s Anaesthetists, The Local Children’s Network of Anaesthetists, The Difficult Airway Society, & The British Association of Day Surgery. She was also an instructor for ALTS, APLS, PEARS & SPEARS courses, and educational supervisor for part-time and Foundation Year trainees. Locally she was Clinical Governance lead from 2003, and an effective departmental chair (2005-9). Nicky was a popular and much respected colleague who combined considerable clinical, teaching & administrative duties with her family responsibilities using great efficiency and good humour.

Other biographical information

Nicky married Rob Richards, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Porstmouth, in 1989, but continued to practise as ‘Chaderton’. They had five children (Katherine, Claire, Alex, Emma & Meagan) whose ages at the time of writing (2017) range from 25 to 19, and lived in Wickham, Hampshire where Nicky was a governor of the local primary school.
