Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
Served in the Royal Navy from qualification until the end of WW! (finishing as a Lt Commander) then being house surgeon, casualty officer, senior resident anaesthetist and RMO at Saint Thomas’s before becoming the first full time anaesthetist there in 1924. It was his major focus, but he also worked at the National Hospital for Paralysis and Epilepsy (later Neurology and Neurosurgery) in Queen’s Square) and the Evelina Hospital for Children from 1925-35. On the outbreak of WW2 he re-joined the Royal Navy and served for the duration at the Naval Hospital in Plymouth. A consultant from the inception of the NHS, he retired in 1954.
Professional interests and activities
He was honorary secretary of the RSM’s anaesthetic section for 1928-30, but thereafter focused on advancing the service at St Thomas’s, keeping abreast of clinical developments and teaching others.
Other biographical information
A charming man with a dry sense of humour who valued family life he loved music and gardening. Married to Frances Perry, they had three daughters, one of whom also became a consultant in London.
