Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

After graduation Inglis was Casualty Officer and House Officer at Warneford Hospital in  Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. One year later he was appointed as a Resident Anaesthetist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). Through 1948-49 he served as a Squadron Leader (Anaesthetic Specialist) in the RAFVR. In 1950 he worked at Gulson Hospital, Coventry as an Anaesthetic Registrar, before returning to QEHB as Senior Anaesthetic Registrar. In 1954 he was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist to the United Birmingham Hospitals, in which post he remained until his retirement in the early 1990s. 

Professional interests and activities

While a Senior Registrar, Inglis was also an examiner in anatomy and physiology for the General Nursing Council. When appointed a Consultant he also took on being a Lecturer in Anaesthetics at the School of Dental Surgery, University of Birmingham. He became Consultant in charge of the Intensive Care Unit at Birmingham General Hospital, and part-time Lecturer in the Department of Anaesthetics, University of Birmingham. He served on the Board of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and was chairman of of the Medical Executive Committee of the United Birmingham Hospitals and of the West Midlands Regional Medical Committee. He began publishing  papers on anaesthetic topics in the late 1940s. In 1960 he produced with Victor Campkin the book “General Anaesthesia for Dentistry”. His most notable papers were on anaesthesia for cardiac surgery and neurosurgery.

Other biographical information

He married Irene Duerden in 1945 and they had two children. After Irene’s death he married Gwenyth Rawlinson in 1991. He passed away at the age of 83, survived by his second wife, two children and three grandchildren.
