Biography
Dr Simon Howell trained in Medicine at Cambridge and St Bartholomew's Hospital, London and qualified in 1984. He trained in anaesthesia at Stoke Mandeville and the Oxford Hospitals. He was appointed Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Anaesthesia at the Bristol Royal Infirmary in 1998 and moved to Leeds in 2001.
His research interests include the perioperative management on the frail surgical patient, perioperative blood pressure management, the management of patients with diabetes undergoing surgery, and implementation science in perioperative care.
He joined the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Anaesthesia in 2000 and served as an editor and Finance Director of the charity before taking up his current role as Chair of the BJA in January 2024.
He was Clinical Director of the West Yorkshire Comprehensive Local Research Network (2010-14) and Joint Clinical Director of the Yorkshire and Humber Clinical Research Network (2014-17). He was a member of the Committee of the Vascular Anaesthesia Society of Great Britain and Ireland (2013-16) and Chair (2016-19). He represented anaesthesia in the UK Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Quality Improvement Programme (AAA QiP). His work for AAA QiP was recognised by the award of a Macintosh Professorship by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (2016). He is Co-Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Surgical Sciences in the Leeds Institute for Medical Research (2019-present). He was a member and latterly Chair of the Vascular Subcommittee of the European Association Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (2013-2023).
He is a keen cyclist and a slowly progressing adult learner on the piano.
